Cancel likes Tuchel, but Bayern are not ready to buy him. The problem is João’s character

The dismissal of Julian Nagelsmann from Bayern is an opportunity for Joao Cancelo on loan from Man City, who failed to shine in the new conditions on the move. Thomas Tuchel, unlike his predecessor, is extremely favorable to the defender.

Tuchel is a Cancelo fan, while Joao dreams of winning the Champions League with Bayern. But the future of the Portuguese is still uncertain.

In the first game under Tuhela, Canselu entered the field from the bench, but in the next two matches he played 90 minutes each. The coach immediately said that he was counting on the Portuguese:

“I love Joao, I had to play against him many times. He has the highest quality craftsmanship, everything is on the level – left foot, right foot, passes. I am more than happy that he is here. We’ll need it. I am convinced that Joao is capable of playing for us at a high level.”

Cancelo himself is inspired, in the near future he plans to knock out his native Man City from the Champions League: “Winning the Champions League is a big dream, and I will not back down until I make it come true. Maybe everything will work out with Bayern this year, I don’t mind.”

The Munich club has an option to buy the Portuguese – 70 million euros. But Bayern are in no hurry to activate it, postponing the final decision until May. According to Kicker, the club does not want to buy Cansela. Moreover, Bayern do not even plan to negotiate a reduction in the buyback amount in the near future. 

One of the main factors behind this behavior of the Munich team is the character of the player. João has been experiencing frequent mood swings lately when he doesn’t get enough playing time. This prompted him to leave City, it was noticed in the Portuguese national team and now in Bayern.

In 10 games under Nagelsmann, the defender played only one full game, started 4 times from the bench, and did not even come out once. At the same time, he managed to score a goal and gave 4 assists.

Joao was named to the Premier League All-Star Team last season, having extended his contract until 2027. At that moment it seemed that such a sudden crisis was impossible.

With Tuhela, Cancelo has a chance. His role is similar to last year’s at Man City.

Canselu made a spectacular appearance at Nagelsmann’s Bayern Munich with an assist on his debut against Mainz in the German Cup. Julian saw him as a player who creates width in attack (he is ready to do this both on the right and on the left), which can shift to the center in episodes. A system with a trio of central defenders is the foundation for Canselu’s inclusions along the side. It seemed that the Portuguese would additionally pump Bayern’s positional attack with dangerous flank passes. After a couple of games at the base, Canselu sat on the bench. A tangible point of change is the break in the first match against PSG, when Nagelsmann removed Joao and released Alphonso Davies. Canselu played average: sheds did not go at all, and combinations from the bottom turned out to be slow. In subsequent matches, Nagelsmann retained the old system with the three CBs and preferred Davis and Coman on the flanks. Seems, it is worth focusing on their top form, rather than on the Canselu crisis. At a short distance, the Portuguese lost the competition.
