How far has he gone since Euro 2020…
Christian Eriksen was nominated for the Laureus World Comeback of the Year award.
As we all remember, the Dane suffered a cardiac arrest during a Euro 2020 match – a moment that made the world freeze in horror – and since then he has really done a great job to return and play football at the highest level again.
The 31-year-old is currently out of action with an ankle injury, but has been a key player in Erik ten Hag’s side this season.
The midfielder returned to professional football in January 2022 after being fitted with a cardioverter-defibrillator after spending a fine half of the season at Brentford before moving to Old Trafford in the summer.
He also achieved his goal by playing for Denmark at the World Cup in Qatar.
Having experienced this, not everyone would dare to return, but Eriksen worked hard to restart his career. That is why he was named among the nominees for the prestigious Laureus award.
Along with him, the shortlist included cyclist Annemiek van Vleiten, motorcyclist Francesco Bagnaia, sportsman Jakob Ingebrigtsen, basketball player Clay Thompson and golfer Tiger Woods.
The winner will be decided by the 71 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy, which includes Olympic champions, world record holders and many other great athletes such as United legend Sir Bobby Charlton.
Laureus also gives an award to the best athlete of the year. This year’s footballers nominated for it are Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi.
