A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of up to 7.8 points hit Turkey. The epicenter fell on the city of Gaziantep (population – 1.5 million people). Later, tremors of different power were felt in different regions – Adana, Ankara, Antalya, Kayseri, Mersin, Trabzon, Sanliurfa. Shaking also in Cyprus, Lebanon, Syria and Georgia.
Authorities report 1,498 dead and 7,634 injured, but the numbers keep rising as rescuers are still pulling victims out from under collapsed buildings. In neighboring Syria, at least 430 people have died and more than 1,300 have been injured.
Many athletes expressed their support for the affected countries, including Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric.
