In the final of the 2022 World Cup, Leo Messi gracefully converted an eleven-footer in a penalty shootout: he looked at the goalkeeper and slowly rolled into the opposite corner from him.

In the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup, Diego Maradona similarly struck: he spread the Italian and gently rolled into another goal.

It is curious that both Argentines did not hit the very corner, but between the bar and the center.

Perhaps Diego did it by accident, and Leo deliberately repeated the blow of the legend, with which he has been compared throughout his career. Given the similar gestures of the Argentines during the celebration with the cup, this is quite likely.

Another episode when Messi probably copied the greats of the past was the quarter-final with the Netherlands: after winning the penalty shoot-out, Leo turned to Louis van Gaal and made a gesture that marked goals for Juan Riquelme, who had a conflict with the Dutch coach.
